TAKE ACTION: Tell MTC Commissioners to Pass Historic Transit-Oriented Communities Policy!

The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC), the Bay Area’s regional planning organization, has an opportunity to vote on a groundbreaking policy on Wednesday, September 28th. The Transit Oriented Communities (TOC) Policy will set guidelines for development within one-half mile of our transit stations. Here are three things we love about the policy

It encourages more housing and compact, walkable communities near transit stations, by setting minimum density requirements for new development.
It prioritizes pedestrians, cyclists and transit riders over drivers, by setting parking maximums for new residential and commercial development and mandating that cities study how they can improve connectivity to transit stations for people on foot and wheels.
It requires that cities implement affordable housing production, preservation, and protection policies.

TransForm, Enterprise, SPUR, and nonprofit partners have spent the last year advocating to center equity in the TOC policy. Read more about the work here.

We’re proud of the work we’ve done and the example this policy sets for the nation to develop dense, inclusive housing that supports transit, walking, and rolling near our transit stations.

Subject: Vote YES on the Transit Oriented Communities Policy

Message:

MTC Commission, I am writing to strongly urge you to vote YES on the Transit Oriented Communities Policy. This policy promotes density and active transportation infrastructure like sidewalks and bike lanes near our transit stations – two key strategies to make the region more equitable and accessible. As a member of the Bay Area, I am a strong advocate for more housing and development around our transit stations for all cities. We must grow together as a region to make the Bay Area an affordable place to live and reduce our reliance on driving, which will lower greenhouse gas emissions. As our region continues to suffer from more extreme heat and wildfires connected to climate change, as well as rising inflation and lack of affordable housing, the time to pass the TOC Policy is now. The TOC Policy will make a meaningful impact on climate change, housing affordability and racial and social inequities, problems that continue to get worse without coordinated regional and local action. Thank you for your work to prepare the Bay Area for a more equitable future.
